2024-10-24

The Nissan Rogue and the Mitsubishi Outlander share many components. However, the latter offers a plug-in hybrid version, while its Japanese cousin does not. Nissan fans have been eagerly awaiting a PHEV version of the Rogue for several years. It seems the Japanese manufacturer has listened, as a plug-in hybrid version is expected to be added to the Rogue lineup for 2025.

Nissan made the official announcement during the unveiling of the all-new Murano, an event reserved for journalists. As expected, Nissan did not provide any details about the powertrain of the future Rogue PHEV, nor its potential price range. However, Nissan was clear that this version of the Rogue will soon be available in the United States and Canada, which is the most important news.

The Mitsubishi Outlander's Powertrain?

Although nothing official has been mentioned about this, it is expected that the new 2025 Nissan Rogue PHEV will use a powertrain similar to that of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. This system combines a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with two electric motors, generating a total power output of 248 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

The electric motors are paired with a 20 kWh battery pack, allowing the Japanese manufacturer's SUV to offer a range of about 61 kilometers (38 miles) in 100% electric mode. Having tested it myself, I can assure you that it’s possible to cover an additional 15 to 20 kilometers (9 to 12 miles) in summer conditions. In short, in my opinion, Mitsubishi's system is among the most efficient currently available on the market. That’s why I believe Nissan will use the same powertrain.

No official release date has been announced yet, but it is expected that Nissan will unveil the Rogue PHEV by spring 2025 for a potential market launch early in the year. One thing is certain: this is a model buyers will be eagerly waiting for, and it is likely to make the Rogue even more competitive.
